Sudan’s press: Trying to keep the story alive

“Who was the first casualty of the war? –The Truth,” says the Secretary General of the independent Sudan Journalists Syndicate. Since the outbreak of war in mid-April 2023, the Syndicate estimates that over 30 journalists have died, and over 27 newspapers and 40 radio and television broadcasters have shuttered. Given these grim statistics, it’s not surprising that Sudan is experiencing a severe news gap at a time when the country most needs timely, impartial information. Instead, the warring parties have filled the narrative to the detriment of Sudanese society, says political analyst Mohamed Latif.
