Yarmouk Library: A cultural refuge in restive southern Khartoum

The vast majority of Sudanese children have now lost nearly two full academic years since the conflict began in April 2023. While there have been sporadic re-openings in “safe zones,” the education system remains on the brink of collapse. This is one reason why the Yarmouk Library in the formerly restive southern Khartoum area remains a lifeline for many youth and adults alike, providing access to books and a cultural island amidst a sea of destruction. The library is so successful it helped develop four other libraries in the area.
