Despite huge challenges, Tawila Hospital continues operations

Despite huge challenges, medical volunteers have managed to keep the beleaguered Tawila Hospital alive. In June last year, clashes between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces took place, displacing tens of thousands and leaving the town in rubble. Armed men raided Tawila Hospital and ransacked the facility. Incredibly, volunteers and a handful of outside supporters managed to re-open the hospital two months later.
The hospital, however, desperately needs medical support as supplies and equipment remain few and far between, says Tawila Hospital Director Mohammed Abubakr. This is particularly acute given the influx of displaced people fleeing the conflict in El Fasher and travelling to Tawila.
