Urban farming: Gardens to survive a war-induced famine

Residents of southern Khartoum, trapped in war zones, are struggling with an expanding hunger crisis. They live in constant fear of looting, attacks and arbitrary detentions by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, local residents told Ayin, so much so that even accessing markets to purchase basic goods proves impossible. Even if residents can safely reach a market, few have income to purchase commodities with ever-increasing prices, triggered by limited secure trade routes. 

Many have found home farming the only solution to provide some of their essential food needs, especially vegetables.  Now within homes, public squares, school yards, among other areas, Sudanese civilians are finding innovative ways and locations to develop gardens and survive.
